Screenwriting is often understood as a sophisticated literary genre, a creative writing style. Some might even argue it can't be taught. Because a screenplay deals with words on paper it conceals a misconception: that it takes the fourth grade and sympathy for the typewriter to write a screenplay. Truth is, screenwriting has nothing to do with literary poetics. It deals exclusively with images and sounds. It's a unique language with its own grammar and syntax. A screenwriter has to think, feel and express through images and sounds alone. This is not an innate language. Although we all know how to "see" a film very few know how to "write" a film, just like a child who understands its language but has to go to school to learn its ABC's. Monomito wants to alert Portuguese audiovisual professionals for the urgency of better screenplays, as well as to empower Portuguese screenwriter's capabilities by a regular organization of International Workshops and Seminars.
