Inspired
by Joseph Campbell's Monomyth, four screenwriters and one producer
decided in 2006 to honor the man, by stealing his idea (which
was already "borrowed" from James Joyce) to start the
enterprise MONOMITO Screenwriters.
Our main aim is to develop and help raise professional standards
of Portuguese screenwriting, either by writing our own material
for television, film and multimedia, as by setting up international
screenwriting workshops and seminars with invited tutors. We wish
to stimulate audiovisual professionals, not only screenwriters,
for demanding better screenplays, better stories.
For
us telling stories concerns a responsibility that subjugates individual
authorship. No story belongs to a single author. Rather they are
always the reflection of a given culture. It doesn´t really
matter WHO tells the story. What matters is HOW the story is told,
what impact does it have on a given audience, and if it stimulates
to personal activity. Furthermore, stories are a collective product.
At MONOMITO, even if a specific screenplay is developed by one
person, it is impossible for that person to hold all the credit.
Its technical appraisal, the sharing of ideas, opinions and helpful
solutions turn every work into a collective process. This way
we attain a creative dynamic in which individual expression is
always attached to the group.
